United States: 23 Convicted in Major Sex-Trafficking Ring (Operation Dark Night)😉

In one of the largest sex-trafficking cases in recent United States history, twenty-three people have been convicted for running a widespread prostitution network known as Operation Dark Night. According to U.S. officials, the traffickers lured women from Mexico and Nicaragua with false promises of legitimate employment and better lives, only to force them into prostitution once they arrived in the country. The victims were subjected to brutal physical and psychological abuse, often coerced into performing sexual acts with dozens of men each day—sometimes up to fifty—for as little as twenty-five dollars per client.

Investigators revealed that the traffickers operated across multiple states, including Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas, frequently moving the women from city to city to evade law enforcement. Many of the victims were kept under constant surveillance, deprived of their earnings, and threatened with harm if they attempted to escape. The ringleader of the operation, Joaquin Mendez-Hernandez, known by the alias “El Flaco,” received a life sentence in federal prison, while others involved were sentenced to terms ranging from seven months to twenty years.

The investigation, led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the FBI, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), exposed a sophisticated trafficking network that had been exploiting women for years. Prosecutors charged the defendants under U.S. federal law, specifically 18 U.S.C. § 1591, which prohibits sex trafficking by means of force, fraud, or coercion. Authorities stated that the victims are now receiving counseling, legal aid, and housing support through national victim-assistance programs.

Officials say the case highlights the persistent and hidden nature of sex trafficking within the United States. It demonstrates that such crimes are not limited to large urban centers but also occur in smaller towns and agricultural regions. The conviction of these traffickers marks a significant victory for law enforcement agencies and reinforces the government’s commitment to protecting victims and dismantling networks that profit from human exploitation.
